Youth Leadership Advisory Team
What happens when you take a great group of young activists, give them a national forum to strut their stuff, and ask Add Verb Productions to help them do it? A performance presentation that will knock your socks off. The Youth Leadership Advisory Team (YLAT) is an organization comprised of the Maine youth who reside in State Custody, their guardians, case workers, and other important adults in their lives, working with facilitators from the Muskie School of Public Service. In August 06, YLAT was invite to present on their work in Maine to Foster Care stakeholders from around the US at the Destination Future conference in Washington, D.C. Five young people, representing founding as well as current members of YLAT, wove their stories together to present a dynamic oral history and inspirational call to action. Key accomplishments were highlighted in the performance, such as bringing a sibling reunion program called Camp To Belong to Maine, writing policy and subsequent legislation on foster care youth rights, and finding a way to not only survive but to thrive through the system. The group has been asked to present their program not only in Maine, but also in other states—we’ll keep you posted as we know more. |
